Everett, a senior level executive, came in with many goals for his Executive Coaching. Everything from wanting to become a rock star when he gives presentations, to mastering persuasion during negotiations, resolving high level conflicts, getting others to do what’s needed and handling tough, sensitive conversations. Everett runs into everything and everyone in the course of his high-powered week.
Everett did get everything he wanted, but Everett’s biggest win was something he never expected. And that was the incredible relationship that unfolded with his three-year-old son.
Everett is 6‘6“ tall. Three year-old Liam is a little over 3 feet.
Everett never realized the impact created by the physical distance between them when he was talking to Liam. He didn’t realize it until he put all his energy into making real eye contact and making a real connection with his son.
Everett made a new habit of getting really close to Liam and looking him straight in the eye whenever either one of them was speaking. When Liam started to talk to him, Everett put down everything he was doing, walked over, got close, at eye-level, and looked Liam straight in the eye, paying careful attention to everything Liam was saying. He did the same whenever he wanted to tell Liam something.
Of course he did it with tremendous affinity, that part was easy.
Something registered in Liam‘s eyes Everett had never seen before. It was intense delight. His little boy’s eyes were smiling at him with love and joy.
Everett felt a rush of love.
Their relationship changed instantly. And it grew from there. Still growing. The power of it grips Everett’s heart. What it means to him can never be measured. It’s the greatest gift he’s ever received in his life. And he made it happen.
So many people who come to us for training or coaching have a goal to also improve their personal relationships. For many, these relationships mean more to them than any they have at work.
Causative Communication transforms your ability to connect with any human, with every human. And that includes the ones you cherish most.
Everett transformed his relationship with his son. And while Liam doesn’t know about Everett’s coaching or what he learned to help him succeed at work, he doesn’t need to.
Liam knows how he feels. And he knows that his father fills his heart with joy.
Be the cause!
