I was coachng a group in-person. A man in the group said his goal was “to become a clearer, more compelling and confident communicator, to overcome feelings of insecurity around those more established and knowledgeable.”
During the workshop he asked me, “How do you improve posture?” I observed how he was sitting: slouched a little, his head tilted slightly to the left.
I said, “Dignity.” Then I pulled out a dictionary and said, “Let me read you the definition. Dignity is the quality of being worthy.”
I put the dictionary down and said to him, “Get the idea you are worthy.” Everyone in the group watched him.
You could see on his face the moment he got the idea. At the same time, he sat up straight. His shoulders went back. He held his head straight. He tilted his chin slightly up.
Everyone in the group gasped and there was an outpouring of positive feedback. From that moment on, he walked tall, he sat tall, he spoke with a quiet dignity that was powerfully compelling.
That’s what dignity looks like.
People often try to change the outward thing: the posture, the voice, the eye contact, the gesture.
But what makes a man stand tall? An instruction to straighten his back? A reminder to lift his head? A lesson in how to carry himself?
Help him understand what drives posture, help him get the right concept, and watch what happens.
What I did with him came straight out of Chapter 16 of Beyond Persuasion: The New Route to Extraordinary Outcomes.
Chapter 16 is about how to use a dictionary to create change. Not just change but individual transformation and even group or whole organization. With many important concepts, not just dignity.
A dictionary.
That’s not the only thing that will surprise you about this virtual coaching program. Each chapter is a surprise. Each chapter gives you an ability you never knew about. Your coach makes sure you can create magic each step of the way, specifically with the extraordinary outcomes you want to create.
The next Beyond Persuasion session officially begins soon, on September 15. That’s when the materials will be released and you’ll get the Welcome email. It’s self-paced so you can start when you like. You have till December 15 to complete the program.
