Doing tomorrow what you can't today

Note: We have officially opened the doors to the next session of Beyond Persuasion® that makes you wildly successful at persuasion. It’s a 30-hour, self-paced, virtual coaching program you can start whenever you want and do at your own convenience. You have until Dec 15 to complete. It’s challenging and rewards you with tremendous abilities.

“Night and day.”

They were watching themselves, enjoying their own and each other’s final videos, the team we coached in our Causative Communication workshop last week. Awed by the dramatic improvement they saw from Wednesday morning to Friday afternoon.

Wednesday morning, first thing, I videoed a “difficult” conversation with each of them. I had them choose the conversation, and I played the person they were talking to. The conversations they chose were truly difficult. They said I was “uncannily realistic”.

In the first video, they tried to persuade me. The conversations all started well. However, even after they tried their best approaches and rationales, I was unpersuaded. They each left the conversation without knowing why they had lost. They all said, “This is exactly what happens.”

Friday afternoon, I videoed them again, in very challenging conversations, except this time they possessed a new set of abilities.

In Friday’s video, they were amazing. No matter what I threw at them, they each accomplished their purpose in a matter of minutes, with both of us feeling good. One of them in 42 seconds.  They had achieved a level of communication ability that not only brings about satisfying outcomes, but creates exceptional relationships.

In baseball, it would be the difference between striking out, or making that perfect contact between bat and ball that lets you round all the bases. In skiing, it’s the difference between crashing out on the black diamond slopes, or proudly wearing the ribbon with Olympic gold.

There’s talking. Then there’s communicating. The difference between these two may not be visible to the average person, but is very visible in the effect you create on the other person and in the deep satisfaction of your outcome, including the relationship you develop.

On Wednesday, these were already intelligent, capable people. They could talk. They could offer rationales. But they couldn’t create the satisfying outcomes they wanted. On Friday, they could.

What changed?

They discovered and developed abilities that enable them to accomplish amazing things.

And if that much can be brought forth in three days, one has to wonder how much lies within us that we have yet to discover.

That is worth remembering the next time you come up against something you cannot do. When you say, “I can’t do this,” it most often means, “I cannot do this now, with the abilities I presently know how to exercise”.

The right question is, “What ability do I need to develop?”  Then study and dedicatedly practice enough to make it strong. There’s no ability you can conceive of that doesn’t lie within you waiting for you to wake it up. You are capable of greatness.

Don’t buy the idea it will take you a long time. You can do on Friday what you couldn’t on Wednesday.

If you’d like any help with that, Causative Communication and all of our other courses give you powerful skills in a matter of days.

Be the cause!
