Effective Communication: Skills for Engineers

Program for Engineering Managers is also available.

Strong engineering is analytical. Strong communication has its own disciplined skill set. You can have the right answer and still struggle to move it forward. Success in communication determines whether your ideas are understood, supported, and acted on. Complex ideas raise the bar even higher. Clarity, structure, and presence matter more the more your technical expertise needs to reach others. This training focuses on the situations engineers and engineering leaders deal with every day: meetings, design reviews, cross-functional discussions, difficult conversations, collaboration and getting executives and senior leaders to understand and buy-in.

You will learn how to:

  • Speak up with clarity and confidence

  • Present complex ideas so they’re quickly understood

  • Gain alignment in meetings

  • Turn debate of opposing views into productive discussion

  • Persuade senior leadership of necessary changes

  • Get other departments on board

  • Resolve conflicting priorities

  • Reduce unnecessary friction

  • Build strong, effective working relationships
