The recipe for powerful persuasion

“Every time I try to convince them, they get irritated. It’s beginning to look like they don’t even want to hear about it anymore.”

I’ve heard this many times, many people I’ve coached. Sometimes it’s regarding a boss or executive leadership team. Sometimes it’s a person they work with. Sometimes it’s someone who reports to them. Sometimes it’s another team. Or a challenging customer. Sometimes it’s about politics. Sometimes it’s with their teenager at home.

It could be anything, any situation where they’re trying to convince or persuade, to introduce a new idea, to get buy-in or make change happen.

They explain and explain. And then they say, “No matter how I explain it, I still get ‘No’ or ‘We’ll think about it’ or ‘It’s just not a priority right now’. Or worse, they just ignore me.”

When that happens, you feel stopped. Horrible feeling.

Real persuasion happens when the person, group or organization wakes up and recognizes the truth of what you're saying, to the point they are moved and inspired to act.

When they do, they can’t help but change, they can’t help but transform.

That is the key to seeing your vision come to life in another person.

It takes two sets of skills to be able to do that.  One is the full array of skills called communication skills.  I cover those in several workshops: Causative Communication and Transforming Your Presentation Skills are two of them.

The other ability is never talked about, and yet your success in life depends on it.  It’s the art of bringing someone to a new recognition – bringing about that split-second they finally understand what you’ve been saying. It’s the ability to skillfully guide someone to that moment when the words land and they see it clearly for the first time, creating that instant when understanding hits and the world changes for them.

Most people think persuasion is about piling on reasons, evidence or clever arguments. But if the other person only hears the words without getting them, nothing changes. The real skill is in bridging that gap. When they actually get it, it feels like the lights get switched on.
